Service Description: This service estimates the location and mass of cropping residues across NSW and contains information on cereal straws, non-cereal straws, hay and silage, rice hulls and cotton gin trash (CGT). The mass is expressed in dry tonnes at 0% moisture content (MC) and in tonnes at harvest 'As is' MC or post-processing MC for rice hulls and CGT. This information has been collated for the Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessment (ABBA) project and will be available for use on the Australian Renewable Energy Mapping Infrastructure (AREMI) platform, to build a national map to service the renewable energy sector. It is also been used for the Climate Change Fund - Biomass for Bioenergy Project (2018-2023) and will be available for use on a DPI interactive tool platform that will assist a range of stakeholders including landholders/farmers, project developers, policy makers and academics.

Comments: This service estimates the location and mass of cropping residues across NSW and contains information on cereal straws, non-cereal straws, hay and silage, rice hulls, cotton gin trash (CGT) and sugarcane bagasse and trash. The mass is expressed in dry tonnes at 0% moisture content (MC) and in tonnes at harvest 'As is' MC or post-processing MC. This information was originally collated for the Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessment (ABBA) project and has been updated several times. It is available for use in the NSW BioSMART tool (Biomass Spatial and Modular Assessment of Resources Tool - https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forestry/science/forest-carbon/biomass-for-bioenergy/nsw-biosmart) and on the National Map (https://nationalmap.gov.au/) platform.
For more information on the derivation of the residue volumes please contact the NSW Forest Science unit (https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forestry/science/forest-carbon/abba).
