Layer: NSW Harvest All Residues (ID: 0)

Name: NSW Harvest All Residues

Display Field: REGION_NAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This dataset estimates the location and mass in dry tonnes at 0% moisture content (MC) and in tonnes at harvest 'As is' MC of forestry harvest residues for native cypress, native hardwood, plantation hardwood and plantation softwood across NSW, Australia. This information was originally collated for the Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessment (ABBA) project and has been updated several times. It is available for use in the NSW BioSMART tool (Biomass Spatial and Modular Assessment of Resources Tool - https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forestry/science/forest-carbon/biomass-for-bioenergy/nsw-biosmart) and on the National Map (https://nationalmap.gov.au/) platform. The boundary features are from Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) and this layer is mapped using the Management Area boundary. Each region shows the total annual average tonnes of combined harvest residues including native cypress, native hardwood, plantation hardwood and plantation softwood residues for the period July 2013 to June 2023 (average of 10 years). This layer gives a quick reference summary of the 4 wood types, which have been individually mapped in more detail, where you can find information on the potential residues from crown and branches, and pulp logs. The residues were calculated using production data collated from FCNSW and from research carried out by the NSW Forest Science unit, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - Forestry. The residue calculations were based on formulas that took into consideration a component of residues to remain in the field. These included 50% of crown and branches for native cypress, native hardwood and plantation hardwood; 100% bark residues for all hardwood species; and 100% stump residues for all wood types. Please note, Southern NSW plantation softwood pulp logs have not been released due to commercial confidentiality and there are no pulp logs available in Western NSW. For more information on the derivation of the residue volumes please contact the NSW Forest Science unit (https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forestry/science/forest-carbon/abba) and look at: Plantation Softwood: Ximenes F, Ramos J, Bi H, Cameron N, Singh B & Blasi M (2012) Determining Biomass in Residues Following Harvesting in Radiata Pine Forests in NSW.
