Description: DescriptionThe Terrestrial Crayfish (Euastacus maccai) is a medium-sized, endangered freshwater crayfish that can grow to 6 cm long. It is usually dark brown to black on top, with a pale underside and reddish claws tipped with orange. It is difficult to tell apart from similar species because the differences are very subtle. This species is found only in highland areas of northern New South Wales. Unlike most crayfish, it lives in burrows away from streams, often in damp soils like swamps, paddocks, or soaks. The indicative distribution is based on confirmed records, expert elicitation with regard to the known habitat of the species being upland swamps and soaks, the NSW Hydro Line and the Species of National Environmental Significance (SNES) database (DCCEEW, 2026). Data Lineage & Processing History1. Source DatasetsSpecies Distribution Data: DCCEEW Species of National Environmental Significance (SNES) and selected marine and cetacean species dataset.Hydrology Data: NSW Spatial Services NSW Water Theme - Hydro Line (all stream orders).2. Geoprocessing StepsStep 1: Attribute Extraction (Species Filtering)Action: An attribute filter was applied to the DCCEEW SNES dataset to isolate the specific target species and its required probability of occurrence.Query Parameters: SCIENTIFIC_NAME = 'Euastacus maccai' AND PRESENCE_CATEGORY = 'Species or species habitat likely to occur'.Result: An intermediate polygon boundary representing the indicative habitat distribution of Euastacus maccai.Step 2: Spatial Clip (Hydroline Extraction)Action: The NSW Water Theme - Hydro Line was spatially clipped using the filtered species habitat polygon as the bounding feature.3. Final Output DescriptionDataset Contents: This dataset represents all hydroline network features (streams and waterways) that spatially intersect with the Indicative habitat footprint of Euastacus maccai.
